LEADING CORPORATIONS -- ADOBE, CADENCE DESIGN SYSTEMS, CISCO, NEC ELECTRONICS, ORACLE -- PARTICIPATE IN PILOT ENABLING EMPLOYEES TO COMMUNICATE WITH THEIR PHYSICIANS ONLINE
Alameda, CA, March 23, 2001 -- Healinx Corporation announced today that several leading Silicon Valley employers have joined together to pilot Healinx's innovative webVisit service to facilitate online communication between employees and physicians. Healinx Corporation, the premier provider of secure Web-based, doctor-patient communication services, has created webVisit to make it easy for doctors to provide patients with the high-quality, online healthcare that they have been demanding.
The webVisit is a non-urgent, structured clinical communication between a patient and his/her physician. The webVisit moves beyond e-mail or simple messaging to replace an office visit or phone consultation for follow-up, preventive and non-urgent care. Unlike e-mail, the webVisit is secure, clinically structured and provides a mechanism for physician reimbursement.
The Silicon Valley Employers Forum (SVEF), an affiliate of the Pacific Business Group on Health (PBGH), is spearheading an effort to ensure high-quality, affordable healthcare in California. SVEF will be leading the online doctor-patient communication pilot along with some of the nation's premier high technology companies.
Companies participating in the pilot include: Adobe Systems, Incorporated; Cadence Design Systems Inc.; Cisco Systems; NEC Electronics and Oracle Corporation.
"Adobe is joining some of the nation's premier high technology employers in piloting innovative online communication between physicians and their patients," said Yana Hajjar, senior benefits manager, Adobe Systems Incorporated. "As early adopters, our employees have come to expect that we will continue to provide them with cutting-edge healthcare services."
According to Peter Shott, senior director of benefits, Oracle Corporation, "As employers, we are eager to test new ways to meet employee demand for online doctor-patient communication and, through this pilot, we are providing our employees with a secure and effective online communication system."
Reimbursement
The pilot is the only one in the country testing a reimbursement methodology with multiple
employers, multiple independent medical groups and national health carriers. Health plans
will be able to include webVisits in physician compensation programs. The pilot involves
physicians from San Jose Good Samaritan Medical Group, Santa Clara County IPA, and the surrounding
South Bay area. Aetna and another national carrier will pay the webVisit
claims on behalf of employers. Nearly 2,000 employees will participate.
"We are supporting this important pilot study because employer demand for online doctor-patient communication is clear and we want to be responsive to our customers and members in supporting innovative healthcare services like the webVisit," said Gerald Bishop, MD, network medical director, Aetna.
About webVisit
The webVisit begins with the patient logging onto the system either through his/her medical
group or physician's Web site or through www.relayhealth.com.
Patients describe their symptoms using a "Smart Symptom Wizard", an interactive interview
that transforms the patient's communication of symptoms and problems into a complete, concise
narrative for the physician. This is an important differentiation from other e-mail based systems
used for doctor-patient communication. Complete with the patient's health profile, the Healinx service
additionally offers self-care information and provides physicians with customizable treatment
options, a triage mechanism and a prescription feature. With all of these tools, physicians
can efficiently respond to patients with an appropriate course of action.
"People are feeling increasingly pressed for time and are demanding improved access to their physicians," said Giovanni Colella, MD, president and CEO of Healinx Corporation. "The webVisit addresses consumer demands by providing a convenient, clinically structured way for physicians and patients to communicate with one another that will eliminate long telephone wait times, reduce unnecessary office visits and enhance care delivery."
Pilot Evaluation
"The Healinx webVisit is aligned with our mission to improve quality measurement,
maximize cost efficiency, boost employee satisfaction, and increase access to care," said
Stirling Somers, executive director, Silicon Valley Employers Forum. "We will be studying
reduced absenteeism and employee satisfaction with the webVisit to evaluate the value
of patient/provider communication tools for both employers and employees."
The pilot will evaluate the impact of webVisits on employee satisfaction, provider satisfaction and absenteeism. Satisfaction surveys will be issued to patients and physicians and will evaluate specific parameters of satisfaction. For employees, evaluation measures will include increased satisfaction with health benefits, as well as perceptions of enhanced access to physicians. For employers, success will be measured in terms of reduced employee absenteeism and increased productivity and improvements in employee satisfaction.
The pilot will run for approximately six months to one year, beginning March 2001.
