Healthcare executives have long known how the electronic sharing of clinical information within healthcare communities will enhance collaboration, improve healthcare productivity, and reduce unnecessary costs. It will also increase patient access to care and enhance the overall patient experience. Through ARRA/HITECH, the Federal government is offering financial incentives to motivate providers to establish a full EMR and care coordination infrastructure to facilitate the secure, efficient exchange of health information.
While these short-term financial incentives are important, executives are equally motivated to ensure the changes to their technical infrastructure are sustainable to meet their evolving clinical and operational needs. With this in mind, much consideration must be made to how this transition is managed and each element’s impact on the hospitals and their affiliated providers, as well as how they address the expectations and enhance the experience of their patient populations. Only after fully weighing these considerations can you confidently move forward with plans to make the necessary changes to facilitate health information exchange across your community.
