Meeting the meaningful use criteria for ARRA incentive qualification will require many hospitals and health systems to establish health information exchange across their community. With tremendous investments in current infrastructures and technology, adding this additional functionality can’t come at the expense of existing operations and productivity. Likewise, current workflows and processes must be taken into account before pursuing any fundamental changes.
When considering health information exchange to meet the meaningful use criteria, you should consider the overall impact on operations, the speed/ease in implementation, and the maintenance/support resources required. You should also consider the impact on your partners, referral community and your patients. Qualifying for ARRA incentives is important, but implementing a scalable system that enables improved care coordination and patient outcomes and streamlined processes to reduce operational costs will yield much better results—and ROI—in the long run.
