Patient Engagement

No matter what you think about Meaningful Use or the Affordable Care Act (ACA), changes are happening today in U.S. healthcare environment. Hospitals, health plans, and physician groups are increasingly planning and executing transitions from the traditional fee for service care models to new models of care delivery, such as Patient-Centered Medical Home (PCMH) or Accountable Care Organization (ACO). The success of these new care models will be reflected in a variety of measurements, including improved patient satisfaction and care outcomes – outcomes which are influenced to varying degrees by the patient’s activities and/or behaviors. At the same time, research has shown that the more engaged a patient is in their care, the better outcomes they will achieve.

So it is no surprise that “patient engagement” has become a key buzzword in the industry. The competency to engage patients in their care will become a major success factor for hospitals, physician groups, and health plans in the future. There are many ways to engage patients, but what has shown to be the most impactful is to improve the quality of communication between the patient and their providers.

The good news is that there are many tools and techniques to help with improving communications, and patient satisfaction, and RelayHealth has a full complement of them – from secure messaging to sharing lab results to online billing to follow up calls in a post-acute environment.
